Following our recent tour of the East Midlands, it became apparent that heavily loaded touring is best done on a bike designed for the purpose. Ruth had been using a hub-geared Airnimal Joey, a serious bike and one that Airnimal claim is capable fully loaded touring, but still not quite the same as a purpose built tourer. Meanwhile Jo was using a GT moutain bike fitted with slicks. This too didn't quite cut the mustard when riding alongside others on purpose-built machines.
On our return, therefore, with some pangs of reluctance Tim decided to have a clearout of the shed, thin out his bike collection by selling some on E-bay and use the proceeds to provide his wife and daughter with proper touring machines.
The sale of two tandems raised £450. Added to this was the very reluctant sale of Tim's Airnimal Chamelon - another £550 in the pot. This proved more than enough to purchase a second hand Henry Buron Toruing bike for Jo and a Raleigh Sjourn for Ruth. Both of these machines, due to be collected this weekend should make the ride down to Portugla that bit more comfortable and fast. Here they are:
